There is no one size fits all approach to MTIs at BMT. Each one will be different and do things with their own style.
Some MTI's have been known to ask a question such as "who likes bowling" and there will always be at least one kid who raises their hand high and says, "I do!" and that's how you become Latrine Queen. Which is the trainee in charge of the bathroom clean-up crew. Why bowling? Because you’ll be cleaning toilet bowls. Checkout the BMT jobs and responsibilities article.
Not all MTIs use this approach though, some will straight up say what they need volunteers for. It all depends on your specific MTI and how they do things. Be careful when your MTI asks for volunteers and watch out for trick questions! Many times, the MTI will try to assign the hardest jobs first, that’s because they are also the most important.
