Airmen Describing Cyber Systems Operations

Cyber systems operations in the Air Force involve the use of technology and techniques to defend, exploit, and attack in and through cyberspace. The cyber systems operations specialists work to protect the Air Force's information systems and networks from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, disruption, modification, or destruction. The typical duties of a cyber systems operator may include:

  • Monitoring and analyzing computer networks for potential threats and vulnerabilities

  • Identifying and responding to cyber-attacks on Air Force networks and systems

  • Developing and implementing plans to protect Air Force networks and systems from cyber-attacks

  • Collaborating with other military branches, federal agencies, and industry partners to share information and coordinate responses to cyber threats

  • Keeping up to date with the latest tools, techniques, and threats in the field of cyber security and cyber warfare

  • Participating in training, drills, and exercises to maintain and improve skills

  • Providing guidance and training to other Air Force personnel on cyber security best practices and procedures

  • Performing incident response and investigations of security incidents

  • Participating in classified and unclassified meetings with other cyber systems operations team members and other agencies

It's important to note that depending on the specific role, a typical day may also include different responsibilities.

Cyber Systems Operators manage servers that host local applications and web applications. Most work in a typical office environment along side the same ranked peers. It's important to note that you may hold this AFSC and be pulled to do another job in the cyber career field. As an airman it is your job to be adaptable, and helpful. To do this job you also have to qualify for top secret clearance. Cyber Systems Operations is an extremely versatile job, we are located all across Air Force installations, all over the world.
