Airmen describing Air Transportation

Air Transportation in the Air Force is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of cargo and passengers on military aircrafts. They are responsible for loading and unloading cargo and passengers on aircraft, as well as the coordination and scheduling of air transportation operations. They use a variety of equipment, such as cargo loaders and pallet jacks, to load and unload cargo and baggage, and use the weight and balance information to ensure that the cargo is distributed properly on the aircraft. They also perform cargo and passenger manifesting, movement of hazardous materials and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

A typical day for an Air Transportation specialist may involve:

  • Loading and unloading cargo and passengers on military aircrafts

  • Coordinating and scheduling air transportation operations

  • Operating and maintaining cargo handling equipment and vehicles

  • Performing cargo and passenger manifesting

  • Movement of hazardous materials and ensuring compliance with safety regulations

  • Collaborating with other transportation personnel to ensure that cargo and passengers are transported safely and efficiently

  • Participating in training, drills, and exercises to maintain and improve skills in air transportation

  • Providing guidance and training to other Air Force personnel on air transportation best practices and procedures

  • Participating in classified and unclassified meetings with other air transportation team members and other agencies

  • Participating in military operations, including cargo and passenger transportation

It's important to note that depending on the specific role, a typical day may also include different responsibilities. Air Transportation specialists are critical personnel for military airlift operations, ensuring that cargo and passengers are loaded and unloaded correctly and safely, and that the air transportation operations are scheduled and coordinated efficiently. They work closely with other members of the crew to coordinate the loading and unloading of cargo and passengers and ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Air Transportation airmen plan and organize air transportation activities, including determining the supplies, facilities, and personnel needed. These airmen do procedures for loading both passengers and cargo aboard aircraft and implement any necessary safety precautions for handling dangerous materials, special cargo, mail, and baggage. Air transportation airmen are also direct air transportation activities, including unloading and any airdrops of supplies or other items. They establish procedures aboard aircraft for any passenger or aircraft clearance across international borders.
